Production units

Production capacity

Fonderie Palmieri produces iron castings from small to large series, with parts from 1 to 300 kg and an annual production capacity that has exceeded 14,000 tonnes.
The entire cycle – from raw material management to shipping – takes place within the Calenzano (FI) plant, with advanced technologies and quality control at every stage of the process.

The automatic Savelli moulding plant with Formimpress technology is suited to both small and large series.
The flask size is 900 × 750 × 350+350 mm,
for castings weighing between 1 and 300 kg.

Raw materials

Only selected materials, checked according to strict internal procedures. Every supply is accepted only after radiometric testing, chemical analysis and verification of technical specifications. Analysis certificates are logged in dedicated management systems. Material is stored in covered, marked and clearly delimited areas.

CORE DEPARTMENT

This recently renovated department uses Cold Box technology with 8 machines for producing cores from 5 to 60 litres. Cores are coated with water-based products – in full compliance with environmental regulations – and dried in a ventilated oven.
The department has dedicated coating tanks and assembly benches. All stages undergo inspection with systematic logging.
Since 2025, 3D printing technology for cores has also been operational, using the ExOne system (Binder Jetting), which allows complex cores to be produced directly from CAD files, without geometric constraints.

3D PRINTING

ExOne 3D printing for cores using Binder Jetting technology: a print head selectively deposits a binder onto layers of foundry sand, forming complex cores directly from CAD files, without physical patterns or core boxes.
Compared to traditional processes (Cold Box, Shell Moulding), this achieves freer geometries, shorter development times and a fine surface texture that improves the quality of the final casting.

MOULDING

The automatic Savelli moulding plant with Formimpress technology ensures reliability, dimensional accuracy and batch repeatability.
The large flask pool makes it possible to manage continuous casting without disrupting the production rate.
Cooling times in the flask are controlled by an automated management system.

MELTING SYSTEM

The heart of production consists of two medium-frequency induction furnaces by Otto Junker with high power density, with a melting capacity of 5 tonnes every 48 minutes. Medium-frequency technology allows each batch to start from a solid charge, enabling different iron grades to be melted in every 5-tonne cycle.
Since 2017, the Induga Junker Puma Pro 1500 system has been in operation – the first installation of this generation worldwide – which controls pouring through weighing and dual-camera monitoring.
Temperature and melting parameters are continuously monitored and logged.

SHOT BLASTING AND DEGATING

After cooling, castings are degated using a Clansmann handling robot.
Surface cleaning takes place via two separate lines: the Disa Ct3 shot blaster for bulk processing of large volumes, and the Banfi monorail shot-blasting line for delicate, complex or heavy parts, processed in clusters on dedicated hooks.
Completing the department, we have a robotic EIRON shot-blasting centre. This system is dedicated to the deep, thorough cleaning of internal passages, a process that is essential to guarantee full compliance of castings with the industry’s strictest quality standards.

FETTLING DEPARTMENT

Our fettling and finishing department is equipped with the latest generation of automated technologies, ready to handle castings of any size and guarantee the highest precision standards:

  • 3 Koyama automatic fettling centres: dedicated to castings up to 30 kg.

  • 1 PRO-SERVICE centre: optimised for processing castings up to 200 kg.

  • QD Robotics and Lianco centres: two cutting-edge robotic islands specifically designed for larger, heavier castings.

HEAT TREATMENTS

Fonderie Palmieri has a battery of 3 heat treatment furnaces for special cast irons, with capacities of 3, 6 and 12 cubic metres respectively. All thermal cycles are continuously monitored and logged.
Fonderie Palmieri carries out the following heat treatments in-house for special cast irons:

  • stress relieving/stabilising
  • subcritical annealing, full annealing
  • destabilisation of chromium irons
  • air hardening
  • normalising
  • graphitising.

PATTERN SHOP

Fonderie Palmieri manages the entire life cycle of moulding equipment.
For the creation of new patterns and core boxes, qualified suppliers are selected and followed at every stage by our in-house technicians. The internal pattern shop handles the maintenance, modification and repair of equipment.
Over 2,000 pieces of equipment are archived and identified with a unique traceability system.

SHIPPING

The finished product is stored in a covered area of approximately 500 m².
After fettling and final inspection, castings are weighed, packed, logged and prepared for shipping.
Fonderie Palmieri also offers custom packaging and works with qualified logistics partners for deliveries in Italy and abroad.
